The Pittsburg City Commission on April 14 approved the Fire Department’s request to buy 50 portable digital radios from Uplink LLC of Pittsburg at a cost of $64,659.70, to be funded from the public‑safety sales tax.
The Fire Chief told commissioners the radios are compatible with the county’s digital towers and will replace the department’s aging analog equipment, improving interoperability with county EMS and neighboring departments. He said prior incidents on jurisdictional boundaries limited radios’ ability to communicate, and the new digital radios include noise‑cancellation and higher decibel range features that will help firefighters hear and communicate more effectively.
The chief said the department will retain and reprogram older radios as backup units for large incidents. Commissioners asked whether the purchase had been bid; the chief said he solicited quotes from local dealers, and Uplink was the lowest local vendor for the required Motorola‑compatible equipment.
The commission moved, seconded and approved the purchase by voice vote. The procurement is part of a broader multi‑agency interoperability effort with the county.
