Commission honors DPS employees and local partners with service and life-saving awards

The Public Safety Commission opened its April meeting with presentations recognizing Department of Public Safety employees and outside partners for long service and for life-saving actions.
Colonel Martin introduced a series of awards honoring employees for 30, 35 and 45 years of service across Highway Patrol, Texas Ranger and Aircraft Operations divisions. Dozens of employees were named for service awards.
The commission also presented life-saving and director's awards to troopers and local responders for multiple incidents between December 2024 and 2025: incidents included a high-speed pursuit culminating in a suspect driving into a mall storefront, multiple water rescues during severe flooding, swiftwater rescue at Belton Lake, application of tourniquets and first aid at crash scenes, and emergency response where officers entered hazardous conditions to save lives. Named awardees included Trooper Brody Telford (director's citation and life-saving awards referenced in separate incidents), Officer Patrick Blair, Carrie Spate, Corporal Dustin Henderson and multiple local residents and responders.
Commissioners described the awards as the highlight of the meeting and thanked awardees and families for their service.
No formal action was required; the presentations proceeded early in the agenda before staff returned for new business items.
