Fremont City gifted students showcase drones, rockets and Mars-simulation projects

Students in Fremont City Schools’ elementary gifted program showcased a year of STEM projects to the school board, describing drone demonstrations, museum field trips, model rockets and technology research. Haley Burgerer and Mia Wenel of Atkinson Elementary described a drone day when speakers from the Tiffen University Drone Academy and local public-safety agencies demonstrated drone operation and career uses. “Mr. Chambers engaged us with drone demonstration, explained how drones fly, and talked about many uses of drones,” one presenter said.
Other students recounted trips to the Liberty Aviation Museum and the Challenger Learning Center, where pupils took on mission roles such as communications, navigation, rover operations and life-systems monitoring in a Mars-mission simulation. Student presenters said they built model rockets, used altitude trackers and collected launch data during a May 14 launch of more than 70 rockets.
Tommy Michael, the gifted intervention specialist at Krogan, thanked Fremont City Schools for supporting field trips and hands-on STEM experiences across the district and noted the role of North Point Educational Service Center in the collaboration. Board members praised the students’ work and the district’s gifted intervention specialists for creating opportunities to explore careers in engineering, aviation and related fields.
The presentation was followed by regular board business, including contract and personnel approvals and a treasurer’s report.
