Board adopts new music and science instructional materials; keeps 2025'26 calendar after snow-day review

Mrs. Valness presented the music committee's K'212 recommendations and the science committee's K'212 and middle/high recommendations. Both sets of materials were budgeted for purchase for the 2025'26 school year with implementation slated for 2026'27. The board moved, seconded and adopted both music and science materials by roll-call votes with all members recorded as voting yes.
On the calendar, district staff provided options to make up four snow days. After discussion board members noted that Yankton currently exceeds the South Dakota Department of Education required hours (district representatives listed additional hours by grade band) and that teachers work extended hours across the year. The board moved to keep the school calendar as published for 2025'26; the motion passed by unanimous roll-call vote.
The motions were procedural approvals and did not include policy changes; the calendar decision concluded the district's process for the current school year schedule.
