Trailhead Learning Center hailed as a new early‑learning model in Yankton

Melanie Ryken, speaking for staff at Trailhead Learning Center, told the Yankton School District board that the district opened “the state's first early childhood center of its kind” and described a year of planning and adaptation that produced stronger‑than‑expected student growth.

Ryken said staff from four prior buildings “stepped into something completely new” and adopted a model focused on visible learning, collaboration and thoughtfully designed spaces. She credited teachers, parents and community partners for making the inaugural year a success and said spring assessment data show reading and math gains that “surpass anything we've seen before.”

The board watched a short video featuring students and staff; recorded student remarks included lines such as “I love my teacher” and “I love TLC,” which board members cited during questions as evidence of student engagement. Board members who toured the facility praised design features — including glass walls and maker spaces — and noted that classrooms appeared highly focused during walkthroughs.

The presentation highlighted that Trailhead serves preschool, junior K and kindergarten in a model the presenters said was not available elsewhere in the region. Ryken said course design and staffing needs for the facility will continue to be reviewed before any programmatic expansion.

The board did not take formal action on the presentation; discussion centered on lessons learned from the first year and praise for staff implementation. The district and presenters described the facility as an investment in early learning, with board members encouraging continued monitoring of outcomes and community engagement.

The meeting moved afterward to several curriculum and budget items on the agenda.
