National City — The council authorized a temporary extension of American Golf’s operating agreement for National City Golf Course to the end of October to allow the city and operator to finalize a multi‑year lease and address urgent repairs. American Golf representatives said storms in 2024 caused damage that required repairs and that they have invested in course restoration, youth programs, senior clinics and community events.
Joyce Shelton, representing American Golf, and Jose Gomez, the course general manager, detailed community use (more than 68,000 annual visitors, including thousands of local residents, youth and seniors) and said the operator will prioritize a bridge reconstruction that reconnects the clubhouse to the first tee. Dozens of residents, Sweetwater High players and longtime players spoke in favor of preserving the course as an affordable community resource; a handful of speakers urged the city to press American Golf for more maintenance and revenue share.
Council voted unanimously to grant the short extension while staff and American Golf continue negotiating a longer lease and clarifying repair timelines and financial terms. Staff will return with a finalized agreement for council consideration before the extension expires.
