Board hears update on new Indiana accountability model and upcoming wireless-device ban in schools

The Springs Valley Com School Corp board received a briefing on Indiana’s redesigned school accountability system and on a new state law that will restrict students’ use of personal wireless communication devices during the school day.
The presenter summarized the accountability changes that will factor each student’s academic mastery, attendance (noting a 94% attendance benchmark), growth, dual credits and credentials into a school’s overall A–F grade. "Each student in the corporation will contribute points to our overall school grade," the presenter said, describing basic academic mastery metrics and additional points earned through credentials and dual credit.
The board was also briefed on Senate Enrolled Act 78, described in the meeting as taking effect July 1. The presenter said the law "prohibits the use of wireless communication devices including cell phones, tablet computers, laptops, digital cameras, gaming devices, smart watches, or any similar device that connect to a cell ... or the internet during the school day." He added that school-issued Chromebooks are exempt and that superintendents can authorize device use in emergencies. The board was told administrators will develop storage recommendations and post guidance to families; the policy will appear for a second reading at the June meeting with expected final action to follow.
Board members were also notified that more detailed guidance and family communications will be provided over the summer to explain how the district plans to comply and how devices will be stored during the school day.
