During new business on July 21, staff presented several operational and revenue ideas for Radford Parks & Recreation. Commissioners heard that a new check-in station has been added to the senior center entrance to improve patron counts, membership promotion and security, and that the department is considering replacing the current check-in system with one that supports online registrations and rentals (a demonstration is scheduled for July 29).
On sponsorship and advertising, the commission reviewed a proposal for Parks & Recreation to take over the field banner advertising program. Staff said Rec would seek advertisers and place outdoor signs on mesh windscreens; the proposal is subject to a vote by the Chamber. Inside the Rec Center, staff plan to offer two sizes of gym banners, standardize TVs throughout the facility, remove foyer bulletin boards in favor of digital advertising, and install a 5-foot interactive outdoor touchscreen purchased with a Community Development Grant.
Commissioners also discussed a proposal to convert one racquetball court into a rentable golf simulator, keeping one court for racquetball. Staff said the simulator would be rented by time periods, pricing is under consideration, and sponsorships were suggested to help purchase the equipment; the commission reacted favorably overall.
Mr. Seth Gillespie, council liaison, also raised a separate proposal that Parks & Recreation assume rental and usage responsibilities for Triangle Park. Commissioners did not take formal votes on these proposals during the meeting; next steps include the July 29 demonstration for the check-in system and awaiting the Chamber's decision on banner program control.
