Fire veteran retires; deputy promoted and town announces grants and demolition oversight

At the Oct. 8 Select Board meeting staff announced long‑time fire department employee Tom Buckley will retire after 34 years of service and that Deputy Chief Thomas Kenvin will be promoted to Assistant Chief, effective Oct. 13.
Presenter (speaker 3) said Buckley "has had 34 years of service" and described his contributions to accreditation and department operations. The promotion of Thomas Kenvin was announced as an internal succession to support Chief Kelleher.
Staff also reported the town received a municipal road safety grant (announced in the meeting as $22,489) intended to help reduce roadway crashes, injuries and fatalities; staff said they will coordinate with police and DPW on whether funds can be targeted to a recently scrutinized intersection on Route 106 and that a traffic consultant (TEC) has been retained to analyze the location. The town also received a $9,600 allocation from the Mass Cultural Council local cultural council program to support community cultural work.
Schneider Electric’s demolition work began Oct. 1 with MassCEP observers on site, neighborhood flyers distributed and coordination with DPW. Staff told the board the contractor will extend weekday exterior work hours to 5 p.m. (previously planned to stop earlier) and that asbestos supervision from DEP had contacted at least one neighbor.
The board thanked staff and invited colleagues to an event celebrating Buckley’s service on Friday at the fire station.
