Eustis distributes $35,255 to 14 charities from 'Amazing Race' event; residents request more youth-program support

City events staff and the director of communications presented $35,255.82 in proceeds from the March Amazing Race for Charity to 14 local organizations at the May 7 commission meeting and invited the charities to a group photo. "The events team is proud to award $35,255.82 to 14 local charities this year," an events staff member told the commission as checks were distributed and photo opportunities arranged.
Director Sherry Moan introduced the event team and the charities and said next year's race is scheduled for April 3, 2027. Distributed awards included $4,498.36 to Hand in Hand Recovery, $3,652.52 to the USIS African American Heritage Committee, $3,229.09 to Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter and a set of equal awards of $2,382.91 to multiple partners who ran challenge stations.
During the audience-comments period, boxer-program operator Raymond Rivera described financial pressures that threaten a local boxing gym that provides youth programming and asked for support from the city's PAL program and connections for fundraising. "I'm in the verge of closing it up because we can't meet our financial goals," Rivera said; commissioners and staff offered to help connect him with potential fundraisers and program partners.
Commissioners praised the community organizations and urged continued community partnership; staff provided application dates and next steps for nonprofit involvement in future events.
