Kinnelon schools honor students, teachers and retirees at May 19 board meeting

The Kinnelon Board of Education recognized dozens of students and staff at its May 19 meeting, honoring K–5 'Koala Kindness' award winners, Continental Math League and Math Olympiad achievers, and several long-serving staff who are retiring.
Mr. Mongan, principal, opened the student recognition portion, saying, “It’s really nice to see how many people came out,” as kindergarten through fifth-grade winners were called forward and photographed. The board honored students grade by grade and acknowledged awards that included regional and statewide recognition for music and academic contests.
Administrators presented the Continental Math League and Math Olympiad results, naming top finishers across third through fifth grades. A presenter noted that Stony Brook School received a high achievement award in the Math Olympiad and singled out individual students who placed in the top ranks.
The board also held an extended tribute to retirees and staff award winners across district buildings. Superintendent (S7) and school leaders highlighted decades of service from transportation staff, teachers and counselors. Among the recognitions: Kathleen McKenna was honored in the kindergarten category; Dr. Carrie Bhatt was named an educational specialist of the year; Mary Kay Catalano received district recognition connected to the governor’s teacher awards process; John Mannion was named educational specialist of the year for Stony Brook; Bonnie Hendricks was recognized as PRM's teacher of the year; and Signora Maria Fusa was named KHS teacher of the year.
Speakers stressed the long-term impact of awardees and retirees on students and the community. About the retirees, the superintendent said the district is “so grateful for your service,” and building leaders recounted personal memories and examples of dedication.
The ceremony concluded with thanks from the board and a short recess before business items resumed. The board will continue district business at upcoming meetings, including a June 9 session expected to include student recognition for grades 6–12.
