Commissioners approve special-use permit for Honeycamp cabins and RV spots with seven-night limit

The Meriwether County Board of Commissioners on May 11 approved a Special Use Permit for Parcel 186-001-01 (36.43 acres) to allow four cabins and five RV/wagon spots to support a hunting- and event-oriented operation.
Planning and Zoning Director Cassandra Jones told the board that the Planning Commission recommended the stipulations the board adopted: no more than four cabins, each limited to 1,000 square feet, and up to five RV/wagon slots. Applicant Joey Pendley, who operates the Honeycamp Event Center, said he would accept a special-use permit rather than rezoning the entire property to neighborhood commercial.
“Special use is acceptable to me,” Pendley said, adding that the cabins and RV-style wagon units would support hunters and equestrian visitors and that he did not intend retail development on the site.
Commissioner Gene King, whose district includes the property, said he preferred a special-use permit because it keeps future changes controlled and requires future proposals to return to the board. Vice Chairman Jennifer Snelson successfully pressed to increase the maximum stay for cabins from three days to seven nights, citing typical multi-day hunting trips and local economic benefit from longer stays.
King moved to grant a Special Use Permit with the stated stipulations; Vice Chairman Snelson seconded the motion. The vote was unanimous.
The board directed staff to reflect the permit terms in the county files; Mr. Pendley may later return to request additional cabins or uses, but any expansion would require board review under the special-use framework.
