Malmstrom Air Force Base briefs commission on Sentinel modernization, search-and-rescue operations and local economic impact

Colonel Stephen Meister, commander of the 341st Operations Group at Malmstrom Air Force Base, briefed the Great Falls City Commission on Jan. 6 about recent base activity and regional engagement.
Meister said base leaders and local officials discussed the ICBM mission and Sentinel modernization with Headquarters Air Force planning staff, and he noted visits from senior leaders including U.S. Strategic Command. He announced another round of Sentinel town halls planned for late March and early April with details to be released later.
Meister described recent search-and-rescue activity executed with an MH-139 helicopter and other mission partners: the 40th helicopter squadron conducted 14 missions in 2025 totalling 54 flight hours and saving six lives; Major Collin Urbanowicz received an Air Medal for a 2025 rescue where he rendered aid overnight before extraction. Meister also said MAFB’s updated direct economic impact to the region in 2025 is $331 million annually with an additional $53.7 million in indirect job impact.
The Commission received the report and expressed appreciation for the base’s community partnership and regional economic contributions.
