Board declines $615,000 buyout offer for county tower site, opts to keep existing lease

Van Buren County supervisors rejected TowerCo IV LLC’s one-time $615,000 offer for a perpetual easement of the county tower site and decided to retain the current lease arrangement that pays $2,385.13 per month.
The Van Buren County Board on April 27 declined an updated one-time lump-sum offer from TowerCo IV LLC to purchase a perpetual easement for the county communications tower site and related access and utility easements.
County Auditor Lisa Plecker relayed that Bryan Cawelti, lease consultant for Tower Alliance, presented an offer from TowerCo IV LLC for $615,000 in exchange for a perpetual easement covering the tower and fenced buildings north of the sheriff’s office, plus a non-exclusive access and utility easement. The county currently receives $2,385.13 per month under the existing lease.
Following discussion, on motion by Supervisor House, seconded by Supervisor Meek, the board voted to decline the offer and to keep the lease as it stands. The motion passed 3–0.
The board record does not show further conditions or counteroffers; the motion as recorded preserves the status quo monthly payment to the county and leaves open future negotiation if the board chooses.
