Peterborough staff to post weight limit on Grove Street Bridge ahead of refurbishment

The Peterborough Select Board heard Dec. 17 that engineers have recommended a temporary weight posting for the Grove Street Bridge while the Town moves forward with a planned refurbishment. Town staff said the limit will remain in place until work to replace decking, clean masonry, repair joints and address stormwater is completed.
Nicole MacStay, speaking for Town staff, said engineers have inspected the bridge annually and recommended posting a weight limit “until the refurbishment is done.” She said truck traffic will be detoured and that Mr. MacLean has been coordinating with downtown businesses to ensure large deliveries can be rerouted without disruption. Chair Tyler Ward asked whether GPS routing would pick up the detour; MacStay said it would.
Board members discussed traffic implications. Bill Taylor noted the narrowness of Grove Street and the attraction a detour could create for truck drivers; Bill Kennedy observed that emergency vehicles would still use the route sparingly. MacStay emphasized this project is a targeted refurbishment intended to improve key elements rather than a complete rebuild like the Main Street Bridge.
No construction schedule or funding details were provided during the meeting. Town staff said the work is slated to be done in the near future and that more information will follow as plans are finalized.
