A separate voice suggested further study via a requests-for-qualifications process to better understand costs and local promoter capacity; county staff clarified that an RFQ is limited by statute for certain procurements and that an RFP would be the applicable public procurement if the commission chose to solicit proposals.
The motion on the floor (to proceed with a county-sponsored RFP and potential county funding level) failed in a roll-call vote. Commissioners opposed moving forward with county funding and signaled preference for private production or additional background work before committing county dollars.
What’s next: Staff noted interest exists in the community for the cultural event and said private promoters or a future RFP could be pursued. The commission did not adopt any county funding for the Mexican rodeo at this meeting.
