Assessor Michelle delivered Luna County's annual report, explaining the office mailed 64,501 notices of value for the 2026 tax year and is operating on a yearly reappraisal cycle. She said the assessor's office recorded an overall taxable-value increase of $31,349,282 for the reporting year, attributing the rise to new land sales, new improvements and market-value increases; the figures were presented "before protests" and may change with pending protests.
Michelle summarized other office work: rendering periods for personal property and exemptions, processing 4,051 deed documents in 2025, and 248 building permits pulled during the year. She noted staff training and cross-training efforts and an ongoing software update.
Later in the meeting, county finance staff presented the preliminary fiscal year 2026–27 budget after prior work sessions. Commissioners said they had tightened spending to respond to rising costs and noted an estimated tax-collection rate of about 90 percent that underlies revenue projections. After discussion and affirmation of the work session outcomes, the commission voted to adopt the preliminary budget to move toward final adoption next month.
Commissioners also accepted the assessor's annual report by roll-call vote during the session.
