Luna County Health Council presents prevention programs, Narcan training and youth engagement

Brenda described the council's origins (New Mexico Legislature-established health councils) and recent funding levels, saying the council received about "$107,995 per health council" this year. She explained local initiatives including medication take-back events (about 109 pounds collected at recent Deming/Columbus events), Narcan distribution and trainings for school staff and students, and the creation of a youth council to advise outreach and a youth corner on the health council's website.
Edith described prevention work in schools and community settings, saying the council has trained roughly 65–67 students at Cesar Chavez and that two overdoses were reversed with Narcan the schools received. The presenters also summarized violence-prevention work, mental-health-first-aid and QPR suicide-prevention training, safe-needle-disposal availability, diabetes testing, and a community-resource directory in development.
Council staff said they are partnering with Deming Public Schools and local law enforcement for future community events and training; they distributed printed fact sheets and noted that the health council meets the fourth Thursday of each month. Commissioners praised the council's work as life-saving and asked how the county can support further outreach.
The presentation closed with an invitation to community members to join the health council mailing list and to use the council's resources posted on the county website.
