Residents press Luna County for streetlight, fields and fixes as staff cites $770,000 parking/road grant

A county official responded that Road 418 is a state road and that power availability and jurisdiction will need to be checked, but confirmed that the county plans resurfacing work tied to a state grant. "It's like 770,000, though," the staff member said when describing the resurfacing work, which the staff said would be two inches of new pavement and will cover parking adjacent to the childcare center and the access road to the Learning Center.
Commissioner remarks and public testimony also focused on recreation. Commenters urged long‑term planning for a civic or recreation center and more fields for youth leagues; a commissioner suggested the county explore the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) for park and field funding and warned of potential Title IX exposure after finding women's restroom facilities at a county softball complex in poor condition. "The girls' bathrooms... were not happy because of the fact there weren't wasn't even toilet paper in there," a commissioner said, adding reports of no soap and unreliable water.
County staff acknowledged outreach problems for a scheduled litter summit and said the county will consolidate stakeholder and public events and reissue meeting notices, with tentative dates discussed for later in June.
No formal votes or ordinances were recorded during public comment on these items; staff indicated next steps would be to check state jurisdiction for a streetlight, schedule repair work following grant timelines and follow up on park restroom maintenance and grant applications.
The board recessed after public comment and planned to resume regular business later in the session.
