Clovis OKs county tire-amnesty MOA, waives fees for March ceasefire event; staff outline community partnerships

The Clovis City Commission approved two community-focused items: a memorandum of agreement with Curry County to extend the city’s tire-amnesty and tire‑shredding program countywide in April 2026, and a staff-recommended waiver of facility fees for a family-friendly ceasefire event on March 14 organized by the New Mexico Martin Luther King Commission.

Margaret Johnston, who identified herself as the KALINDA coordinator for the City of Clovis, summarized the MOA. The agreement would allow the city to rent tire‑shredding equipment (rental to be paid with grant funds), place roll‑off dumpsters at multiple county locations, have county personnel staff the collection sites and provide equipment operators for the city’s subsequent shredding work. Johnston said shredded tires would be reused at the landfill (for daily cover and to stabilize material) and in other maintenance uses, and that locations for roll‑offs were still being worked out with county partners.

Miss Burrows (city staff) described the requested fee waivers for a March 14 event at Hillcrest Park — including free zoo and pool admissions and the use of stage and bleachers — and noted coordination with police, fire and other partners. The city moved and seconded both items; the motion for the MOA was made and seconded by commissioners and carried on the floor, and the fee waiver was approved unanimously.

Commissioners framed the MOA as an extension of the city’s litter-abatement and beautification strategy and noted the partnership benefits of working with Curry County and grant programs. Staff will return with final MOA locations, operational details and scheduling for the April events.
