Sandoval County honors Dion Espinosa and proclaims March 2026 Brain Injury Awareness Month

Speaker 2 introduced the recognition, saying the board “proudly recognizes Dion Espinosa for his achievement, service, and commitment to both his community and his country,” and noted Dion’s ties to the county: he is a 2023 Cleveland High School graduate currently attending CNM in computer science and, since January 2025, has worked for Sandoval County in the public works maintenance division.
Dion Espinosa addressed the board, saying he had not expected to join the military while in high school but that enlisting now felt like the right decision. “I never in high school, I couldn't have said that this was where I'd be going … I think this is the best decision that I'm making,” Espinosa said.
The board also read a proclamation, sponsored by District 2 Commissioner John Herb, noting broad statistics about traumatic brain injury cited in the proclamation: that about 2,800,000 Americans sustain traumatic brain injury each year and about 5,300,000 Americans are living with disabilities caused by brain injury; it also cited New Mexico figures and detailed common causes and treatment challenges. The proclamation named the Health Authority of New Mexico Division of Disability Services and the Brain Injury Alliance of New Mexico as relevant local resources.
Family members spoke briefly at the dais to thank the board, and the commissioners invited the family to come forward for photos. The board moved on to the rest of the agenda after the recognition and proclamation were made.
