At their March 18 meeting, Valencia County commissioners approved several routine but substantive items and heard extended presentations from county staff and extension agents.
Indigent fund: After reconvening as the indigent board, staff (Mrs. Garcia) presented March claims and recommended $68,952.93 for consideration from the indigent fund. The board voted to approve the recommended payments.
Elections funding: County clerk staff presented a memorandum of understanding from the Secretary of State advancing $145,085.06 to help cover the costs of administering the 2026 primary election (the presenter said this typically covers roughly 85–90% of primary costs). The commission approved the MOU and was told the county will see a separate MOU for the general election later.
Summer recreation MOUs: The board approved longstanding partnership agreements to contribute $5,000 to the Village of Los Lunas summer recreation program and $3,000 to the City of Belen, following staff explanation that these are recurring contributions aligned with past practice.
Extension office quarterly report: Extension staff delivered a detailed report on 4‑H and community programs, noting roughly 400 participants across volunteers and youth, award programs, new workshops (sourdough/fermentation, small‑animal school), Master Gardener growth, and partnership expansion (including youth trips to Santa Fe and collaboration with Catholic Charities). Commissioners expressed appreciation and discussed potential use of the fairgrounds for extension programming.
Executive session and property sales: The board entered executive session to discuss multiple real‑property matters (listed in the closed‑session notice). After returning to open session and stating no final action was taken in closed session, the commission directed staff and delegated authority to proceed with the sale of five properties (appraised and vetted by the assessor's office) in Rancho Rio Grande, Rio Del Oro, West Palisades and a Section 28 parcel; the motion passed unanimously.
What’s next: staff will proceed with indigent payments, election MOU paperwork, MOUs for summer recreation providers, extension program planning, and the property‑sale process per the assessor’s valuations and county procedures.
