Valencia County commissioners on March 18 adopted a proclamation designating May as Motorcycle Awareness Month after local rider organizations presented safety statistics and upcoming outreach plans.
Jerry Moya and members of local motorcycle groups thanked the county for promoting motorcycle safety, presented Department of Motor Vehicles statistics compiled by the University of New Mexico on motorcycle fatalities, and announced a county safety ride scheduled for March 28. The groups described typical crash hours and urged motorists to "look twice" for motorcycles; the commission announced billboard and digital signage to run for several weeks as part of the awareness effort.
During public comment, Tom Maraz commended the proclamation and urged a statewide helmet law, saying helmets save lives and recounting fatal crashes he has witnessed. "I would like to see a helmet law passed," Maraz said.
Commissioners read Resolution (meeting record references a proclamation reading and adoption) proclaiming May to be Motorcycle Awareness Month in Valencia County and encouraged community programs and safety activities. The board approved the proclamation by unanimous voice vote.
What’s next: organizers said sign-up for the March 28 safety ride will start at 10 a.m. with kickstands up at noon; county staff will implement the approved awareness signage plan.
