Taos council authorizes $287,806 engineering contract for landfill; councilors highlight composting and soil-restoration work

The Taos Town Council authorized the mayor on May 12 to sign a $287,806.40 contract (exclusive of New Mexico gross receipts tax) with an engineering firm to provide professional engineering and environmental services for the town landfill.
Procurement staff explained the services were previously awarded through a formal RFP and are intended to ensure continuity of operations, regulatory compliance, and project support for the remainder of the fiscal year. The Landfill Board reviewed and recommended the award, staff said.
Council discussion emphasized the high cost of the next landfill cell and opportunities to prolong facility life. One council member advocated scaling up composting and recycling programs to divert organic waste and reduce the frequency of expensive cell construction; the councilor described successful small-scale soil-restoration work in the Cornelio Basin that restored vegetation and reduced dust-on-snow runoff into the regional watershed.
"If we're looking at several million dollars for the next cell at the landfill, we can prolong the life of that and save some money if we really start looking at how we can support composting on a larger scale," a council member said. Council members supported staff direction to continue work on composting, the recycling center and related waste-diversion strategies.
The motion to approve the procurement was moved, seconded and adopted on a roll-call vote recorded by the clerk; the contract will be executed by the mayor and the town will monitor deliverables and compliance with regulatory requirements.
