Vernon County health department reports preparedness exercises, WIC counts, radon mitigation efforts and Limited Agent contract guidance

At the Feb. 9 meeting the health director reported a Region 4 Ebola exercise planned for June 2016, WIC participant counts were distributed, staff described radon mitigation follow-up and a rental inspection, and the department said it must seek transition from Limited Agent to full Agent status per state guidance.
Elizabeth A. Johnson, Vernon County director and health officer, and department staff provided operational updates at the board's Feb. 9, 2016 meeting.
Johnson told the board that a Region 4 Health Care Coalition Ebola exercise is scheduled for June 2016 and that staff continue work on the 2016 Public Health Capabilities identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The department distributed the WIC participant count for January 2016 and noted equipment and supply needs.
On environmental health, staff reported that Mr. Moris completed work with a family on a DeSoto property and closed that case. Mr. Moris said he is working with another family that has a very high radon reading; a mitigation system has been installed but readings remain above an acceptable level, so he recommended installing larger fans and said a contractor will visit the home. Staff also said they will conduct a final inspection of an apartment in Westby that is being returned to management and should be available by March 1, 2016.
Year-end statistics for environmental activities in Vernon County and the Southwest WI Environmental Health Consortium were presented. The department said it has been receiving information about Zika virus from the CDC and the State Division of Health. Johnson distributed the public health report for January 2016, which included communicable disease, immunization and referral reports.
Johnson also stated that the department holds a Limited Agent contract for 2015–16 but has been informed by the Department of Health Services that agencies must make an effort to transition to full Agent status after the next year or risk contract cancellation, which would prevent the department from conducting inspections under the contract.
No formal policy actions or roll-call votes were recorded on these program updates; the board later approved the January budgets and adjourned.
