Vernon County health staff report abatement orders and cleanup work; department warned to seek full Agent status
Summary
The health department reported an Order of Abatement in Wheatland, ongoing cleanup of a methamphetamine-contaminated home in Viola, continuing Zika coordination, and that DHS informed local agencies they must move from Limited Agent to full Agent status or risk contract cancellation.
Vernon County public-health staff updated the Board of Health on March 10 about recent environmental health actions and program-status risks.
Staff reported that a complaint in the Town of Wheatland led to an Order of Abatement being issued; as of the meeting the department had not yet received confirmation that the parties involved had been served with the order. The department said it will continue to work on that case and follow up on service and compliance.
The board heard that staff were involved in assessment and issuance of Abatement Orders for a residence in Viola affected by methamphetamine contamination and that the department is working with property owners to get the home cleaned up.
On communicable-disease coordination, staff said the department continues to receive guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Wisconsin State Division of Public Health regarding Zika virus; no Zika cases had been reported in Wisconsin at the time of the meeting.
The department also notified the board that it held a Limited Agent contract for 2015–16 but had been informed by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services that agencies must make an effort to move to full Agent status after the next year or face contract cancellation, which would prevent the department from continuing certain inspection activities under that agreement.
Board members reviewed these updates during the Public Health Report and budget review. The department distributed the February 2016 public-health report for board review and committed to continued follow-up on abatement and cleanup matters.
