Mill Pond Dam removal to start in June, documentary part of mitigation plan

Durham officials reported May 18 that removal of the Mill Pond Dam is expected to begin in early June and be completed by November, with timing tied to fish-migration windows.
Councilor Curtis Register told the Council he attended a dam-removal neighborhood briefing that drew 20 to 30 residents and said removal will start June 1 or June 15 depending on the fish migration schedule and is expected to be completed by November. He said brush is being removed around the pond but that trees will not be clear-cut, and that arsenic amounts were reported as elevated but not considered a public-health risk. He added that some materials will be sent to an out-of-state landfill (Saugus, Mass.) because the Rochester landfill accepts only certain materials.
Historic District Commission Chair Larry Brickner-Wood said the commission signed a Memorandum of Understanding to fulfill Section 106 requirements and that filmmaker Jerry Monkman will make the required documentary; Town Administrator Todd Selig said a ReelQuest crew will film in the area as part of the mitigation documentary work.
The Council did not take a formal action on the dam removal at this meeting; residents requested additional detail about the timing and detours at a neighborhood meeting and asked for continued updates.
