Monticello commission backs $120,900 skate-park contract for Monticello Community Center

Director Tom Pawelk told commissioners a grassroots skate community first approached City staff in June 2022 and staff worked with that group to develop a concept that fits within the MCC’s existing footprint and meets current safety and operational standards. Pawelk said the project is included in the City’s Capital Improvement Plan but has no City funding for 2026; a community fundraising campaign has raised over $90,000 to date, with the commission told the remaining funds are anticipated this summer.
The project scope presented to the commission calls for on-site fabrication and installation of features for users ages 5 and older while retaining the existing concrete pad and drainage infrastructure. Pawelk said the design emphasizes a user-friendly flow and that the city will follow League of Minnesota Cities guidance on liability and operations. Staff outlined possible programming tied to the park, such as skate camps, and noted plans to address hours (sunrise to sunset), lighting and security cameras, routine maintenance checks, signage and safety rules. Commissioners also discussed a possible community mural.
Two proposals were received: Action Sports of Minnesota and American Ramp Company of Missouri. Action Sports submitted the lowest bid at $120,900; Commissioner Stephen Peterka moved the recommendation to award to Action Sports, Commissioner Danielle Murdoff seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.
Next steps include presenting the commission’s recommendation to the Monticello City Council on April 13, 2026. Following contract execution and insurance approval, staff will hold an on-site meeting. Construction is expected to take approximately three weeks, with completion required by June 30, 2026.
