Afton’s Subdivision representatives ask Caribou County for road improvements; commissioners schedule public hearing and agree on signage

Chet Hopkins, the homeowners association representative for Afton’s Subdivision, told the Caribou County commissioners on June 26 that the subdivision now contains 15 occupied homes, three under construction and two in planning and requested county assistance for road improvements to a 0.90-mile section.
Commissioner Mark Mathews said chips-and-oil paving costs about $75,000 per mile and that the board was open to further discussion about funding. Hopkins raised safety concerns about speeding, singling out the T intersection of Balls Road and Reservoir Road as the most dangerous section. Commissioners agreed to place a yield sign on Afton’s Way at Reservoir Road and to install stop signs on Reservoir Road and Balls Road, converting that intersection to a two-way stop. The board set a public hearing on the matter for its next regular meeting to gather further input and consider paving or other improvements. Hopkins said the subdivision might also consider a mailbox bank but agreed to defer that decision until road funding and priorities are settled.
The public hearing provides an opportunity for residents to present costs, preferred improvements and any contributions from the HOA; the county did not commit to a specific funding source at the meeting.
