El Paso Mass Transit board authorizes city to accept donated mural from El Paso Mission Trail Association

The El Paso Mass Transit Department Board unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday authorizing the city manager to sign a donation agreement to accept a mural donated by the El Paso Mission Trail Association.
Anthony DeKeyser, director of mass transit, told the board the association has partnered with Sun Metro to preserve the historic nine-mile Mission Valley corridor and that the mural "highlights the historical significance of the area and encourages the use of public transportation." DeKeyser introduced Linda Almeida, president of the El Paso Mission Trail Association, and the artist commissioned for the work.
Almeida said the association has worked with city staff and Sun Metro on the project and introduced the mural’s artist, Robert Dosal, and past association president Shelby. She noted the city previously received a donated painting, "Trio Panama," and that Representative Lily Limon contributed a lump-sum donation toward the new mural. "We are representing the El Paso Mission Trail Association," Almeida said, asking the board to approve the agreement.
Artist Robert Dosal described his ties to the neighborhood and said the mural will bring color and pride to Isleta: "I feel like I'm coming back home because I was born just a few blocks away from the site where the mural is going to be at Johnstone Clinic." He thanked city staff and partners and acknowledged the permitting process that delayed the project.
Shelby, identified by Almeida as the association’s past president, said the project will "uplift the community of Ysleta" through art, literature and music. Representative Lewan praised staff work to move the project forward, saying the mural will be "a beautiful sight on the wall of Alameda, right at the corner of Saragossa, catty corner to the oldest mission."
Almeida also told the board the association will coordinate with the city traffic engineer to close the west lane nearest the mural wall during painting for the artist's safety. The board moved and seconded the resolution; the clerk recorded the vote and the item was approved unanimously with board member Puyar Trejo not present for the vote.
The board had earlier approved routine consent items, including the April 1 board minutes, by motion. The meeting was adjourned at 12:29 p.m.
