Peterborough wins SolSmart Gold designation to streamline solar permitting

Peterborough officials announced on Dec. 6 that the town has earned a SolSmart "Gold" designation, a national program that recognizes communities for reducing barriers to solar energy development.
Danica Melone, town planner, told the Select Board the designation recognizes steps such as limiting solar-related inspections to two visits, providing training for building and zoning staff, and creating a solar landing page on the town website. "It did not cost the Town any funds to be awarded the designation," Melone said, but she added that the designation could make Peterborough more competitive for relevant grants.
From the audience, Brian Field of the Peterborough Renewable Energy Planning (PREP) team acknowledged the work involved and applauded town staff. James Long asked whether the designation carried any financial implications; Melone reiterated none to the town directly. Dori Drachman, a member of the public, added that builders would save in "soft costs" due to streamlined permitting, which she said represents a positive financial implication for local projects.
A plaque and media materials were expected to follow the award announcement. The board received the news with applause.
