City manager previews June 1 closure at 8th Avenue and North Roosevelt for major intersection work

City Manager Dave told the Aberdeen City Council the city expects major work at the intersection of 8th Avenue and North Roosevelt Street to begin around June 1 and continue through about Aug. 1, and he cautioned residents and businesses that the closure will be a significant inconvenience.

"There's gonna be some major work at that intersection, and that's gonna begin anticipated June 1, and that has until about an August 1 date," Dave said, adding that the city is coordinating messaging with nearby businesses and placing messaging boards to alert drivers.

Dave said contractors will address potholes caused by recent rain and that parts of 8th Avenue already reopened after weight-testing of recently poured concrete. He also said the city is considering whether to present a future change order to fix the rough railroad crossing at the intersection while the road is closed to avoid doing the same work twice.

Destin, who described operational detail for temporary detour routes, said bypass routes are gravel and are monitored regularly. "It's not gonna be a paved road. It's temporary while construction happens," Destin said, urging drivers to follow posted detour signage.

Council members asked whether rebuilding the intersection would prevent recurring settlement and frost heave at the railroad crossing. Destin said the fix is to remove and reset the concrete, but he had not yet talked to the railroad contact and offered to follow up.

The council did not make a formal decision on the railroad crossing at the meeting; Dave said staff may return with a proposed change order if coordinating the fix during the planned intersection closure is practical.
