Charles Mix County approves $326,361 chip-seal contract and a slate of routine county actions

The Charles Mix County Board of Commissioners on May 14 approved a series of routine but consequential items, including a $326,361 chip-seal contract for County Road 49, renewal of eight alcoholic beverage licenses and approval of financial reports showing $12,088,753.13 on hand.
On a motion by Commissioner Nick Stotz, seconded by Vice Chairman Kory Standy, the board approved a chip-seal/fog-seal contract with The Road Guy Construction Company for $326,361.00 to cover Segment 23-38 (County Rd 49), an 8.52-mile stretch south of Platte. Highway Superintendent Doug Cimpl had reviewed the Geddes Oil Road project, the planned chip-seal work south of Platte, and summer staffing during the meeting.
The board also approved the Auditor's Account with Treasurer and the Treasurer’s monthly report for the period ending April 30, 2026 (ending balance $12,088,753.13), accepted the Register of Deeds’ statement of fees of $11,849.50, and approved plats for Tract 1 of Irwin's Addition (Highland Township) and Lot 2, Golden Pond Addition (Bryan Township).
Auditor Jason Gant presented eight alcohol license renewal applications effective July 1, 2026; the board approved renewals for Choteau Creek Brewing Company (Wagner), Dock 44 Marina (Platte), Dollar General #16067 (Platte), God's Country Campground (Platte), Platte Creek Store (Platte), SD Pheasant Acres (Armour), Ft. Randall Casino (Lake Andes), and Travel Plaza (Pickstown).
Other actions included approval of a Department of Health contract extension to Sept. 30, 2026; approval of a $5,000 Jackie Brecke History Grant to the City of Lake Andes for a museum upgrade; hiring Kevin Plooster as a highway crewman at $22.58 per hour effective May 26, 2026; and approving a six-month pay increase for 4-H Assistant Jo Cee Feddersen to $23.71 per hour effective May 24, 2026.
Emergency Management Director Joel Kotab presented a set of hazard mitigation project recommendations the board approved, including continued participation in the National Flood Insurance Program, water drainage projects near Platte, acquisition of a generator for the county administration building/EOC, prescribed burning plans with landowners, Choteau Creek cleanup from Wagner to Dante, and outreach on water and soil conservation measures.
The board entered executive session at 11:39 a.m. under SDCL 1-25-2 to discuss personnel; the session ended at 12:02 p.m. with no action taken. The meeting adjourned at 12:05 p.m.; the next regular meetings are set for 10:00 a.m. on May 28 and June 4, 2026 at the courthouse.
