The Milton Conservation Commission confirmed plans for a community BioBlitz on July 25–26, 2026, and voted to allocate funds for appreciation gifts and participant prizes.
Laurie DiCesare, a commission member, reported that three naturalists have committed to lead nature walks and activities: Shirley Zundell, a naturalist and birder, will document bird species at Sandbar State Park, and a Middlebury College graduate student associated with the Vermont Mycological Society will assist during the broader observation window (July 18–August 2). Cassie (Planning staff) said Hannah from Recreation has been assisting with advertising and social media promotion.
Volunteer staffing was assigned: registration and Saturday activities (July 25, 8 a.m.–noon) will be supported by Bonnie Whitlock and Joseph Duquette with potential help from Laurie; Sunday activities (July 26, 1–3 p.m.) and the 4–5 p.m. participant recognition will also require volunteers. Colin was asked to tally iNaturalist observations and determine prize winners; Kris Dulmer offered to assist with prizes and donate maple syrup. Laurie requested wooden name tags for commission members and volunteers; Kris and Steve agreed to investigate options, with purchases to be invoiced by the June 23 meeting.
Tim Cunningham moved to allocate funds for BioBlitz appreciation gifts and participant prizes; Laurie DiCesare seconded and the motion carried unanimously. The minutes note both $325 and $350 as the approved amount; commission members asked that the final figure be confirmed before the minutes are finalized.
