Trustees seek clearer wording on Warrant Articles 14 and 15 that would change Searles funding process

Searles School & Chapel trustees on Jan. 20 reviewed Warrant Articles 14 and 15 and agreed that Article 15 should carry clearer language before voters consider it.
Warrant Article 14 restates last year’s article regarding the Searles Special Revenue Fund. Warrant Article 15 would establish a Searles School and Chapel Revolving Fund; trustees were told that, if approved, Article 15 would remove the need to place Searles funding on future ballots and would effectively replace the Special Revenue Fund. Peter Griffin, chair, said any additional wording to clarify the relationship between the two articles can only be added at the deliberative session.
Trustees discussed potential voter confusion arising from having both articles on the warrant and agreed by consensus that explanatory language should be added to Article 15 at the deliberative session so voters understand that its passage would supersede Article 14. The board did not adopt final language during the meeting; Peter Griffin indicated the deliberative session is the appropriate forum for amendments.
The board also noted a Jan. 26 workshop with the Board of Selectmen is scheduled but that town finance has not yet provided Searles financials. Next steps are to prepare suggested wording for the deliberative session and to present financials ahead of the workshop.
