Co-Chair Joanna Sorensen briefed the commission that the Federated Church applied to the Community Preservation Committee (CPC) for funds to replace its roof but that the CPC asked the church to return with a more detailed proposal.
Sorensen said the church is "literally broke" and has declining membership, which complicates the application. Members discussed that because of the church’s institutional status the CPC will require a stronger justification and that one option would be to explore putting the building’s ownership into a trust or other nonprofit to improve eligibility and reduce legal complications.
No CPC decision or commission action was taken at the Historical Commission meeting; the church was advised to return to the CPC after clarifying its needs and ownership options.
