DEIC to consider $395 Juneteenth cosponsorship; members flag dim snowflake lights

At its Jan. 8 meeting the Sharon DEIC discussed a proposed $395 cosponsorship for a Juneteenth event and raised concerns about town holiday lighting.
Jen Illuzzi, the committee chair, said the proposal would have the DEIC cosponsor Juneteenth with a $395 contribution intended to cover park rental fees. Because the item was not on the meeting agenda, the committee did not vote; Illuzzi said the Juneteenth cosponsorship will be placed on the February agenda for a formal vote.
Members also reviewed feedback on the town’s snowflake holiday lights. The lights were described as nonreligious and positively received for that reason, but several members noted the fixtures appear dimmer than desired. Committee members reported the original bulbs are no longer manufactured and available replacement strings are less bright; replacing the fixtures would require additional expense and might need Select Board consideration.
Robert Soffer, correspondence clerk, said the lighting decision is not directly a DEIC matter but suggested the committee could advise the Select Board about the town’s desire for nondenominational decorations. No formal action was taken on decorations at the Jan. 8 meeting.
