The National City Housing Authority announced on Jan. 20 that the Union Tower affordable housing interest list opens Jan. 21 and will close March 13. Angelita Palma, community development manager, told the council that Wakeland Housing & Development Corporation will present a formal project briefing at a Feb. 3 council meeting.
"The Union Tower development located at 2312 F Street in National City is one of our new affordable housing developments," Palma said, describing 94 total units and noting local preference will prioritize National City residents. She added that 22 units are set aside for veterans who will receive VASH vouchers through San Diego County, and that the county provided project‑based vouchers to support financing.
Palma outlined outreach plans: flyers in English and Spanish, online postings, press releases and coordinated work with community partners to assist residents through the lottery and application process.
Council members asked how many units will be released in this phase and staff confirmed the interest list will accept interest across all 94 units; eligibility and local preference will determine which households move forward to apply. The housing authority said a developer presentation is scheduled for Feb. 3 and encouraged residents to check nationalcityca.gov for details.
Next steps: the interest list opens Jan. 21; staff will return with the developer presentation on Feb. 3 and continue community outreach to ensure applicants understand the lottery and local preference process.
