The Uptown Butte Business Improvement District (BID) Board of Directors met May 6 at the Thornton Building and approved several items aimed at promoting the district this summer while advancing longer-term streetscape and façade-improvement plans.
The board voted to purchase 20,000 printed Uptown maps for $5,960 after a motion by board member Matt Stajcar, seconded by Shanna Adams; the motion passed. Butte CVB has pledged $3,000 toward the printing cost to be contributed in July. The board also approved a new BID logo after a motion by Cassie Wick and a second from Mike Potts. Cassie Benson is actively updating the BID website to reflect the branding changes.
Board members discussed operational items for district cleanliness and wayfinding. The garbage-can program was updated to include QR-code signage; Matt Stajcar will order 10 new garbage cans and board members will walk the district together to determine placement. Silver Bow County shops will produce and attach the signage to the cans.
The board spent substantial time on a proposed Façade Improvement Grant program slated for a single 2026 cycle. Members discussed eligible improvements — such as awnings, paint, lighting and other exterior upgrades — and a proposed funding structure that would cover 25% of project costs up to $5,000 per project. The board flagged liability concerns and directed Shanna Adams to consult the County Attorney; members also said they will develop appendices for applicants with material examples, contractor information and project steps. The board nominated Maisie Sulser to assist with program development and intends to consult the Historic Preservation Officer before finalizing guidelines.
Streetscape and public-works coordination also progressed. The BID plans to connect with Shawn Fredrickson of the BSB Parks Department on improvements in public spaces, and the board discussed obtaining bids for planter installations. An RFP for a streetscape consultant has been written; Shanna Adams will follow up with Karen Byrnes. The board scheduled an Uptown Clean-Up for Wednesday, May 27 at 5:30 p.m. toward district maintenance ahead of summer events.
Public Works updates included a project near Arizona Street (outside the BID boundary) presented by Zane Gleason. The board agreed to pause Motherlode/Central Alley work until conversations about BSB stormwater plans are complete, with Jeff Riggs remaining in contact with Zane. Napton Alley was raised as a candidate for upgrades because of heavy use during the Folk Festival; Zane will also follow up on whether sidewalk pressure-washing is feasible.
The meeting concluded with no public comments. The board listed multiple proposed agenda items for future meetings, including term limits, ordinance changes for the next tax cycle and an executive director discussion. The next meetings are scheduled for May 20 and June 3, 2026. The session adjourned at 12:52 p.m.
