The proclamation, read at a village meeting, recorded that Leonard joined the company in August 1959 and was retiring after nearly 66 years of service. It noted a prior proclamation on Jan. 31, 2004, presented by then-president Gregory Matthews, and listed roles Leonard held over the decades — including assistant fire chief, radios and pagers coordinator, insurance committee chair, squad 35 designer and member of the Engine 1 restoration and maintenance crew.
"Glen Ellyn is a wonderful place to live," Ron Leonard said, accepting the recognition and thanking those in attendance. He told the gathering he has lived in Glen Ellyn his entire life and would not want to live anywhere else.
The proclamation described Leonard as having served the community with "integrity and compassion," praising his decades of volunteer service and the time he donated to safeguarding lives and property. The village president, Jim Burkett, was named in the proclamation as expressing the municipality's appreciation.
No legislative actions or votes were recorded in the remarks; the event was a ceremonial recognition of Leonard’s long service.
