Senior Center seeks $150,000 grant; commissioners weigh inspection and matching requirements

Stacie Watkins of the Senior Citizens Center presented the center’s quarterly report on April 25 and told the Caribou County commissioners the board is considering applying for a $150,000 grant through SEICGO. The grant would require hiring SEICGO’s grant writer at a cost of $5,000, a building inspection and matching dollars; Watkins said the roof is a top priority for work if funding is awarded.
Board members expressed concern that accepting the grant could "open a can of worms" if inspection-required repairs obligate county funds. Commissioner Phil Christensen said he would contact Blake to request a preliminary assessment of the building before the board decides whether to proceed.
Watkins also thanked the commissioners for allowing Meals on Wheels to use the county truck for deliveries; she estimated the program would save about $2,500 to $3,000 annually. Commissioners directed Meals on Wheels to fuel at the Road & Bridge site, have routine maintenance performed with bills sent to the county and to continue using the vehicle under those arrangements.
No formal decision to apply for the SEICGO grant was made at the meeting; commissioners requested an assessment and additional information about matching requirements before committing.
