Van Buren supervisors set March 30 public hearing on property tax levies; discuss AG opinion on sheriff salary and possible Mt. Sterling transfer

At its March 2 meeting the Van Buren County Board of Supervisors set a public hearing on the proposed FY2027 property tax levies for March 30 at 6:00 PM in the 1st Floor District Courtroom, as required by House File 718. The motion to set the hearing was made by Supervisor Meek and seconded by Vice-Chairman Dale House; the vote was recorded as Ayes: 2.
During a FY2027 budget work session the Board and County Auditor Lisa Plecker discussed an Iowa Attorney General opinion released Feb. 9, 2026 concerning the Board's responsibility to follow the 'Back the Blue' law when making a salary recommendation for the county sheriff under Iowa Code §331.905(7). The discussion reviewed how the opinion could affect the Board's salary-recommendation process; the transcript records that the matter was discussed but does not show the Board taking formal action on sheriff salaries at the March 2 meeting.
Board members also discussed whether to establish an amount to transfer from the General Basic Fund to the Mt. Sterling Wastewater Fund. That conversation was exploratory; the Board did not set a transfer amount during the meeting.
