Commander CJ Chason told the Transportation and Public Safety Commission about several recent public-safety incidents and community outreach plans and announced a community forum to clarify local law-enforcement roles on immigration issues.
Chason recounted a Nov. 1 police response at Morningside Elementary School, saying officers apprehended a man who used a torch to cut electrical boxes and had set a wall on fire; the subject was arrested on multiple charges, including burglary and attempted grand theft. He also described arrests for an assault with a deadly weapon on Nov. 15 and recovery of a stolen vehicle on Nov. 16, as well as multiple residential burglaries in the Knox block that led to arrests and return of stolen property to victims.
The commander announced reinstatement of an area lead officer program in which four corporals will serve as neighborhood points of contact. "This program is where this one individual corporal will be responsible for a specific area," he said, and the department will roll it out early next year with a social-media campaign to introduce residents to their area lead.
Staff described a community forum tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2026, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in council chambers, to address community questions about immigration enforcement, the role of local agencies and the limits of local authority, homeless outreach and programs such as Care Court. Staff invited the Los Angeles Police Department, a representative from the Los Angeles district attorney's office and possibly a judge to participate. A staff member emphasized the need to dispel misinformation that the San Fernando Police Department assists ICE operations.
Commissioners discussed forum format, the use of pre-scripted questions and live Q&A, translation for Spanish speakers and anonymous question options to protect vulnerable attendees. The chief and staff said they expect broad interest and urged commissioners to invite residents.
