Chelmsford DEI Committee plans spring events, flags tight budget; Parker school group invited to March visibility event

At its Feb. 10 meeting, the Chelmsford Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee reviewed recent Black History Month activities, spring event planning and fundraising needs, and heard from a Parker school psychologist who asked the committee to include a student LGBTQ alliance in a March visibility event.
Members said Trivia Night drew a small crowd and volunteers are needed for Soul Night; the committee reported Jazz Brunch tickets are selling but continued promotion is required. The group acknowledged limited funds for events and discussed fundraising supports from Deb at the Senior Center, assistance from Kaitlyn, and help from Sophie of the Merrimack Valley DEI practitioners’ group. Bill Campbell noted the committee could ask Paul Cohen for $5,000 and pursue sponsorships.
Aaron Lee, a Parker school psychologist and organizer of the student group "Stand up Parker," described the alliance as "a safe space to share ideas" and asked that students be included in the First Parish "Day of Visibility" on March 29. Jeff Soloman proposed asking the students to prepare a statement for the event; Aaron offered to "plant seeds" toward that participation.
Committee members also discussed planning for AAPI Month and a multicultural event in May, a possible police-related event in May that may involve DEIC participation, Pride Month drag-show planning in June, and outreach around disability and mental health observances later in the year. The committee set its next meeting for March 10 and did not take final votes on event budgets or commitments at this session.
