Celina launches Bags to Benches program to collect 1,000 pounds of plastic film by July 2026

Drew Myers, host of the City of Celina’s In the Know video series, announced a local recycling drive called "Bags to Benches" and urged residents to drop off clean plastic film at City Hall to be turned into decking and outdoor furniture through a partnership with Trex.

"They are trying to keep plastic out of our landfills and repurpose that plastic," Myers said in the video, and he set a city target of collecting 1,000 pounds of compatible plastic film by July 2026.

The program accepts only clean, empty plastic film labeled with resin codes #2 or #4, Myers said on camera, and he demonstrated sorting items, noting that grocery sacks and Ziploc-style bags are acceptable when they bear the correct code. Items without the #2 or #4 labels were excluded as nonrecyclable for this program.

Myers said the current drop-off location is City Hall and that more drop-off points will be added as the program expands toward its mid-2026 goal. "Again, bottom line, to keep plastic out of our landfills and doing something really cool with them," he said.

The announcement was presented as part of the city-produced In the Know series. The video did not specify funding sources, details about collection logistics beyond the City Hall drop-off, nor instructions for residents who have questions about specific plastic items beyond the #2/#4 labeling guidance. The city did not announce a schedule of additional drop-off locations or a formal timeline beyond the July 2026 collection target.
