The board unanimously approved a conditional appointment for Lucas Barabie as a truck driver/laborer in the Department of Public Works; the offer is conditioned on a preemployment background check, physical exam, drug screening and obtaining a Class B commercial driver’s license within one year. The board also unanimously approved a conditional hire for Sabrina Barry as assistant animal control officer, conditioned on similar preemployment checks and completion of a rabies vaccination series.
The board appointed Richard Forrest to the Human Services Council, reappointed Richard Walls to the Conservation Commission and approved Laurie Trento for the Taxation Aid Committee. Members also read and approved a slate of reappointments and appointments for special/reserve police officers, constables and traffic constables as submitted by the police chief.
On event permits, the board voted to grant a one-day alcohol-permit request for Otho Meekwood Farm Incorporated to serve beer and wine at listed holiday events, and it waived strict compliance for two road races organized by Ocean State Multi/Gary Manisti scheduled for Nov. 28, 2024 and Jan. 1, 2025; the police chief’s recommended traffic and safety measures were noted.
The board accepted a $5,700 Student Awareness/Fire Education grant and a $2,400 Senior Safe grant and took two donations — $400 in memory of Marie Hicks and $4,000 from Rockwell Amusements toward an animal shelter trailer — all by unanimous votes.
The board authorized the town administrator to sign letters of support for Comcast and Verizon to apply separately for the Broadband Infrastructure Gap Networks grant program and approved a solid-waste contract with MIGA Transportation Group, a five-year agreement with renewal options that begins July 1, 2024.
