City staff told the La Grande Landmarks Commission on June 12 that a local project won a 2025 Main Street grant award of $400,000 to rehabilitate 216 Chestnut Street into mixed commercial space.
The project will retain office space, create a commercial kitchen and allow space for several food vendors; exterior work will include replacing two shop doors (one facing Jefferson Street) and compatible facade improvements. Staff said an urban renewal call-for-projects grant is also likely to contribute matching funds, though that additional funding was not yet finalized.
Staff noted the project team has completed preliminary site planning and that some physical changes (new doorway, fencing for outdoor seating and other facade compatibility reviews) will come before the commission for design compatibility review. Infrastructure work (water, sewer, power) enabling vendor hookups was described as separate from the commission's review, which will focus on historic-compatibility of visible alterations.
The award and project were presented as a downtown revitalization opportunity; staff said further permit and design review items will appear on future agendas when applicants submit formal plans.
