Village staff gave a technical update on a major wastewater treatment facility upgrade planned for Sparta.
The manager described work now under way: decommissioning the existing stabilization pond, installing a temporary tank to handle interim treatment, and later building a new process control building and sludge storage. The long-term plan includes a UV disinfection system as the final treatment phase. "We're getting ready to decommission the pond... we're switching over to this tank here... and then when we get up online with all the system improvements, it'll be a UV disinfecting system," the village manager said.
Staff clarified that 'demolition' in the project documents refers to removal of mechanical components (pumps, blowers, oxidation equipment), not removal of concrete structures. They suggested engineers provide 5-10 minute technical progress reports to council periodically and proposed a site visit in the spring.
The manager also announced plans for a public open house and plaque dedication next month — an open house from about 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. followed by a 6:30 p.m. plaque dedication — and said the village would publicize the event.
The council discussed the timing of the work and public outreach; no formal action was taken during the update. Staff noted a significant sewer grant (described in the meeting as about $1,000,000) toward the upgrades.
