Berthoud public works outlines snowplow priorities, urges residents to clear sidewalks

Keith Knoll, the Town of Berthoud public works operations manager, said Thursday that winter is approaching and residents will soon see the town’s four snowplows in service. “Winter is almost here, and you'll start seeing snowplows around town soon,” Knoll said.

Knoll said town crews will prioritize major arterials and collector roads — the town’s highest-traffic routes and feeder roads — so commuters can travel safely in and out of Berthoud. He explained that the town classifies streets into three categories: major arterials, collectors and local roads connected to collectors.

Parks, forestry and open-space teams will support operations by clearing trails and the Berthoud Recreation Center, Knoll said. He also told residents that clearing sidewalks adjacent to their property is a homeowner responsibility to protect pedestrians: “...it's the homeowners' responsibility to clear the snow on their sidewalks onto the grass of their property,” Knoll said. He added that moving vehicles and trash cans out of the road on snowy days helps crews clear streets faster and helps prevent ice dams from forming.
