Selectmen authorize DPW to contract with Pike Industries for gravel bid

DPW staff, identified in the meeting as Seth, told the board he and highway foreman Jack observed samples and compared vendor materials and field performance. "Two of them were very close," he said, and explained that Pike's material "weathered better in rainy conditions" and did not develop a mealy surface some other products showed. He mentioned Northeast Earth Mechanics as a previously used supplier and noted that a lower-priced vendor, TW Excavation, appeared to mix material and showed organics in its three-quarter gravel, which he found concerning.
Board members asked about the unit pricing and delivery terms. Staff reviewed per-yard and per-ton line items across several products and noted a fuel escalation clause in the bids that could permit modest price adjustments if fuel costs rise. The discussion covered per-unit examples provided by staff (for some products, $37.95 per ton delivered or $28.95 per ton for pickup were discussed) and clarified that the DPW had used baseline volumes (1,000 tons of mixed gravel and 500 tons of stone) to compare vendor bids.
Following discussion, the board moved to grant the DPW director authority to contract with Pike Industries for the gravel bid; the motion received a second and passed on a voice vote.
Next steps: the DPW director will complete contract paperwork with Pike Industries and schedule deliveries as projects require.
